Instructions for Lectors

  1. Thank you for serving in this important ministry.
  2. Please use instructions printed in the lectionary notebook.  For the Scripture Lessons, the reader 1) announces the text, 2)reads the text, 3)announces "The Word of the Lord" and the people respond, "Thanks be to God."  The Psalm text is considered a response to the first reading and a liturgical bridge to the second reading, therefore it ends in silence.  Please do not add comments or thoughts, but simply allow the Word of God to speak in the company of God's people.

  3. Please practice the readings out loud at least one time previous to reading on Sunday.  It really makes a difference. If you are unsure of a word, email or call  Fr Greg.  If you find yourself unsure of a pronunciation while reading, just make one up confidently and very few willl even notice!

  4. Be Natural in Tone. Be natural with the tone and mood of the text. Let the text guide you for the tone. If you have prepared then you will have some sense of the tone of the text.

  5. Speak Clearly. Good diction and enunciation is important, especially for those who have difficulty hearing. Often people complain about the volume of reading, but in reality it is the lack of clarity in the voice of the speaker.  Take your time in reading. Its usually better to read a bit slower than normal to allow for the people to hear.

  6. Using Microphones. Practice using the microphone before worship time. Have someone test you for volume. Be loud enough, but do not blast the congregation. It is better to be a bit too loud than too quiet. Remember that some folks have hearing difficulties. Please remember to adjust the microphone so that it is pointed towards your mouth.

  7. Dress.  Please dress appropriately for worship.  Men are asked to wear long pants and women long pants or skirt/dress but no shorts or t-shirts.

  8. Mistakes are Okay!  We can take a cue from professional musicians on this one -  just keep on reading and very few will notice.  If there is some confusion as to the lesson/page number, etc, don't be afraid to pause and check the printed lections, or to turn to the celebrant for assistance if necessary.
